Tom,
  I think they have a non-symetrical bolt pattern....it only goes together
one way and you haven't aligned it that way, yet.
BTW, do you have the TC correctly installed on the tranny?  There're two
sets of splines that have to click together otherwise you'll toast things
first time you start it.  Put it on the tranny first, then slide tranny/TC
combo forward to the flex plate.  Then rotate TC until you find correct
position.

All of the above is what my tranny rebuild guy told me.
