Those "pins" in the rag joint are NOT supposed to be tight in the slots
they mate with.  The pins are just a safety device should their be a
failure.  Then, they would mate with the slots, but sloppily, and allow you
to continue steering.  When you take the joint apart you will see that
there are actually bolts on each metal piece that attach to the "rag" and
that is what you are steering with.
