scout sometimes starts

working on a 68 scout with a 196 4 cyl. the vehicle started fine and
ran well before i pulled the distributor. the dist was removed to
trouble shoot another truck. anyhow the unit was put back in the scout
and it would not start. after some tinkering it started and ran fine.
then it was turned off and would not restart. it has a new condensor
and another coil has been installed. sometimes it has spark other
times it seems it does not. this vehcle will not even motivate with
ether. any thoughts
