[ihc] RE: ihc-digest V7 #751
Dear Binder,
I have a Scout 800 with a 152. Have replaced the fuel pump 4 times in the
last 45,000 miles, always with a NAPA pump. I have been unable to find a re
build kit or a diaphram. The first replacement pump lasted about 30,000
miles. However the last 3 pumps have only lasted about 5,000-8,000 miles.
In all cases failure was due to a faulty seal, causing an oil leak 3 times
and a gas leak once. I have been told that additives to the gas ( I live in
metro Phoenix AZ) have caused premature failure. In any case, after
getting fed up with frequent pump changing, I decided to go with an electric
pump. Have had it for 6, 000 miles and it works great. I notice that in
the hot weather (up to 115 this past summer) the truck starts easier with
an electric pump.
As far as the actuator arm, it is 2 pieces of steel riveted together, and
was never a problem, The NAPA # for the pump for my truck was .
M3296. This pump is readily available here. Personally, I hated to not go
with an original style pump set up, but I needed to be practical.
My Scout is my daily driver, and I need it to be as reliable as possible.
The engine plate needs to be double gasketed to seal properly, other wise it
will leak.

Or even more likely, he's been perusing a Tad Burness compendium ;) The Art
Center library prolly has everything Tad ever published.
Good job Pete.

Not sure that makes parts any more readily available, Jeep 44 open knuckle
fronts are fullsized stuff from the same era as SII bits. The Wagoneer 44 I
bought didn't have a drag link mounting point on the passenger side knuckle,
it looks like they used a 'pierced' TRE to attach the drag link. That should
work for you, 'course the Jeep hubs are 6 lug, so you're back to mix-n-match
for 5 on 5.5". I couldn't use the Jeep spindles because they were 'big
bearing' and the Ford hubs for 5 lug are 'small bearing'.

I've heard that International's Corporate Communications has sent letters
to the magazines that reported the "Jeep Scout" and to Daimler Chrysler
requesting corrections to the reports.
Chrysler apparently responded that the magazines were incorrect and they
had no intentions of using the Scout name.

Subject: [ihc] fuel pump question
I've got a broken fuel pump on my 66 sporttop (is this
a surprise?)... After removing the pump (with the
glass bowl) from the engine block, and doing some
minor disassembly, it appears the diaphram rubber is
just plain old (is this a surprise?). Immediately
running to my "parts engine", I discover it has a fuel
pump and I remove it... Sadly, while the diaphram is
ok, the acuator arm (my term for the piece of metal
that extends into the engine block and rides, I
presume, on the cam shaft, causing the pump to pump)
is broken. Upon comparison, it appears that the
diaphrams are not interchangable, so now I have *two*
broken fuel pumps.
On to my questions: (1) Are fuel pump "repair" kits
(or replacement diaphrams) available, or am I just
wasting my time looking? (2) Anybody have a similar
"broken" fuel pump actuator arm? I'm concerned that
replacing the fuel pump with the "inverted U shaped"
actuator arm (the pump with the bad diaphram) with a
fuel pump that has a "cast" actuator arm (like the arm
that I found broken) will result in having to
continually replace the pump (and find the broken
piece in the engine). Is the "broken arm" problem a
fluke, or is it endemic to these types of fuel pumps
(with the cast arms)? (3) I went to my local NAPA and
they found a "current" part number for a replacement
pump (though they can't order it). Anybody have
experience with these either? (4) Anybody have
experience with simply putting a plate over the
current fuel pump location on the engine block and
putting in an electric fuel pump? This is a last
resort; I just want to know if it's workable.
Thanks.
