Ted:
The IH drainback holes are notorious for holding oil in the upper valve
train area with very slow drainback; plugged or fully opened. If you
find
any pertinent improvement to this, please share.

I was able to ( reduce ) the symtoms by changing from M1 15-50 oil, to M1
10-30. That was in the 1310 with a 392.
Good tip.
If your problem was aggravated by cold weather, I may not need to go to
such a low end vicosity oil. Ambient temperature where the Scout will
reside doesn't often go below 40 degrees F.

The temperature in this area varies from a little below 0,F in the winter
to tripple digits in the summer. And I made the change in the summer. One
other note. The Mobil 1 is a high detergent and helps keep those little
passages clean, and IIRC the molecules are of a more consistent size than
the dino. type oil. I was also informed that the compression strength of
those little molecules was greater. That's why I use it in an IH 392 with
245000 + miles on it even in the hot summer. Last summer in the 100+
weather, I drove about 25 miles and graded a private road with my 8 way
blade on the front. It was hot enough on the trip back home that when I
stopped the coolant boiled out of the radiator, but during that time there
was no significant drop in oil pressure. 15 psi at high idle and 40 psi at
2500 rpm.
