[ihc] Re: [IHC] deuce & a halfs; some clarification
Mac,
Not sure how ardent you are in your search for the truth, but in the absence of an actual truck, you could just find an M-3-6 parts manual, (that in itself probably no mean feat), and then just take the contract number associated with one of the early truck serial numbers (which actual production serial numbers would start at 501; earlier numbers were made but were prototypes), and go about getting the info from the Marines using that information.
It does sound like a lot of time would be spent on that though.
Ed,
I need to find it again. I got that just before the OBDR, and showed it to John Donnelly and the others on the trip. That article on the OBDR and the #49 Wheels & Tracks that I showed around during our Dunes trip provided some good reading for everyone there. I still have it, and have placed it somewhere 'safe', which is to say 'misplaced'. I know I would not have given away such a precious thing. I think it is most likely on my bedstand among the other magazines and newspaper articles. I will look for it tonight. I am forgetful, so rattle my chain if I do not get back to you in a day or three.

that's very useful information, Colin, thank you. if i ever come across a
surviving M-3-6, i'll remember this. finding an M-3-6, however, is the
problem. i know of no surviving examples of these trucks. there may be one
or two, maybe more, that survived the war and the period afterwards, but i
haven't ever seen one in person, and have not heard of any. there were
roughly 20,000 DUKW trucks made, many of which survive to this day and are
obviously distinctive. IH built quite a few less than that of the M-3-6,
and so far as i can tell nobody found them noteworthy enough to preserve.
if i ever find one, i'll let you know.

Hey, what issue of MVM was that article I sent to you from?
