Aside from Greg's pragmatic "because they could charge more for it" answer..
Having rebuilt a 304, 345, and 392 over the last couple years.. 304/345
pistons are $20 each, while 392 slugs are $40. That's $160 increase in
cost right there. :)
Otherwise my overhauls have been pretty close in cost - any deviation is
mostly related to my personal need to take the next engine just "one
more step further" than the last. :)
Oh.. I run a 392 crank and rods in my 345.. and I run a stroked 345
crank and 345/392 common rods in my 392. :D
It seems to me there was more work put into balancing the stroked 345
crank/rods and 392 pistons than there was when I had the 392 crank and
rods and 345 pistons balanced.
IIRC, the 345 (in a 392) crank had to have weight added, while the 392
crank in the 345 just had more drilled from it.
