RE: [ihc] GVW Calculations

6200# took effect in 1979. Generally, California emissions required
different systems during these years and I'm not sure if 6200# made any
difference there, but it may have.
Howard:
It did. By 1975, virtually all cars in CA had cats, save for the Honda
stratified charge engines. But, trucks had a higher emissions allowance
than cars and were exempted. To qualify as a truck, there was a 6,200 lb
GVWR requirement. Hence, my '76 CA approved Terra doesn't have cats. But a
'79 will. And, IIRC, even the "regular" Scouts fell under these guidelines,
although the Terra didn't have AIR injection because it was a "pick up" but
the Scouts of that vintage did because they were not. Then again, maybe it
was the 345 needed AIR injection to meet the emissions requirements but the
304 didn't. I know that the SMOG mechanics have questioned the lack of AIR
on mine and I've had to point them to their extensive library of emissions
manuals to verify that it WAS NOT originally installed. And no, I didn't
'delete' the pump, valves and tubing.
I guess I could look up the thresholds on the DMV website and see what was
what, but why bother.
