Yes.  A good example of this I've seen and worked on was some 1/2
ton Dodges circa WWII.  They have the front diff removed with a plate
covering the opening.  No axle shafts etc.  Just using the housing
as a solid front axle setup.

IIRC the several I've been around were ambulances but don't hold me
to that.
