  Ryan, I don't think you have a problem identifying a Dana 44 front axle; I
think the guy that told you what they came from was wrong on the application
they came from. Mac did some homework and I'm  convinced that there ARE GM
military pickups with Dana 44 fronts that I wasn't aware of before. The pics
of the trucks he emailed even LOOK lighter duty than the CUCV's, although
'superficially' they look the same, even up to the tow rings and brush
guards. But, they ALL have the standard GM type front axle ends, with
protruding hubs and lockouts, not disconnects or 'no place for locking
hubs'. That is just too much like the Dodge setup (including the 4.10
gearing) to be much of anything else.
  Also, if you got the pics that Mac attached to my email, notice in a
couple of shots the other vehicles in the background- what appears to be a
Ford F350 box truck, and a Chevy/GMC stepvan. I doubt if those are
'mil-spec', despite what anybody says. They serve the purpose they needed
them for so they got them from wherever, maybe the Army motorpool
headquarters ordered 100 of them, but I doubt they're gonna be 24 volt with
blackout lights and all that.
