Yep. That's how all of mine are done.
I've "fixed" several Delco solenoids by using this method. The higher
current to the solenoid seems to convince it to work more reliabily, and
with the heavier gauge wire I don't lose as much juice as the heat goes up
and the wire resistance climbs.
On your problem.. did you use the shim between the starter and the
bellhousing?
