We're talking about hard rings running against extremely *hard* cylinder

I've owned cars with chrome plated cylinders, and it took a long time for
those vehicles' rings to seat. In fact with those vehicles, over a quart
of oil used every 1,000 miles was considered normal by the factory.

While in college I worked for a Ford flat-head engine rebuilder. We used all cast iron rings. They always seated. Later on, I was still re-building engines for my own use and to earn some extra money, and I was hooked by the Perfect Circle ads for their chrome rings.

Those suckers just wouldn't seat for me, probably due to the finish I was putting on the cylinder walls (as Steve S. described). Bon Ami down the carb usually got the job done, but worked better if done early, rather than waiting for the cylinder walls to glaze and get resistant to seating the rings.

I never got over liking the Perfect Circle ads, but I rather quickly got over buying their chrome rings.
