Re: [ihc] 13" clutches ...I think it is possible

---I got this post before Mr. Hofstetter's but it still seems a little out
of order somehow, maybe I need to synchronize my clock and stop worrying
about synchros in the tranny.

---The synthetic motor oil can be bought in cases and there really isn't any
benefit from doing so. The 1 gallon jug is a little better of a deal, but
not much. You can however buy 5 gallon buckets of synthetic gear oil in the
GL-1 range for approximately $30. Which BTW is what you will pay for a jug
of standard gear oil from an auto parts center. The place I buy my gear oil
from is Jackson Oil Products Company. They are the distributor for BP/Amoco
here in Alabama. Cost me $13.31 for Gold Band GL-1 in a 5 gallon bucket.
$5.oo for the bucket (fuel/environmental surcharge) bringing the total to
$18.31. FWIW, you would pay that for a case of standard motor oil and a case
is about equal to 3 gallons. Again, the distributors usually carry a book
that cross-references gear oils to motor oils to synthetics and everything
in between. These books also tell what the transmission/axle/transfer case
manufacturer says to use in their components. The price of my gear oil also
has not gone up $0.01 in the past two years, but that's another topic...
like, I am interested in seeing how much the oil is going to go up at the
distributor since there was "said to be" a rise in gas prices coming on due
to a shortage of oil.

---I would look into buying anything in larger quantities and seeing what
the discount would be. Like Mac says, he uses the same motor oil in his
transmission and TC as he does in his motor. Too bad the differentials don't
call for the same thing or he would really be in business, but buying
synthetic motor oil in gallon jugs and if found, 5 gallon buckets will show
better on the pocket than buying in quarts. They also give you better
containers to put your used oil in. I can't gather up enough to get oils in
55 gallon drums, but it would be ideal if I had a controlled climate shop to
store it in. That would for one, lessen the cost I am paying to the EPA for
containers and two, give me about a lifetime supply of synthetic gear oil to
run in my axles and twice that to run in my transmission and TC. I will
continue to buy synthetic motor oil for my motor, but it would be nice to
get it in containers larger than 1 gallon. I have having a half gallon left
over and despise having quarts laying around... especially when half full.
