Re: [ihc] Re: "E" suffix engines
I have a 68 pickup that came with a 304 and a 1710 list Holley. 14 mpg in
town, 16 on the highway, and I have to use the whole rpm band because of the
4.88 rear end. I frequently drive it down to the desert, but I have to
cruise at 55-60. The 3900 rpm mark is pretty close to 65 mph, and I really
don't want the engine to live there.
The carb has #49 jets in it. If I were at sea level I'd run a few sizes
larger. The engine is comfortable with a full load of tools and equipment
climbing a 6% grade in 4th gear. I used this carb on my B120 travelall last
year going to RMIHR and got about 11 mpg pulling a 20 ft trailer, call it
2000 lbs, more or less. 1220 miles, 110 gallons of gas for the trip. We
cruised the mountains comfortably at 65 when the turns didn't slow us down.
I'd recommend this carb to anybody with a 304. I've been told it's a 270 cfm
carb, but I really don't know if that's accurate.
