One more possibility... crud in the fuel tank gets sucked around the
pickup, blocks it, it stalls.
When the suction is gone the rust slowly drops off the pickup while we
figure out what to do next. If the latest solution takes enough time to
allow the pickup to clear, the engine starts.

The test is to run it out of a clean tank. If it runs, then drain your
tank and try to judge it's condition. If it's rusty get it sealed.
