good thing you mentioned that, Dennis. i had compleatly forgotten the
weight part of the registration fees. i pay my registrations out of hand
without really looking at what the different things i'm paying for are. my
1010 was registered as commercial, the 1110 is currently registered
commercial, and so is the 800A. i don't remember how or why i managed that
with the 800A, but hey, at least it's done. and yes, they wanted weights
for all of them. it adds up quick, but as you pointed out, some of the
advantages of commercial tags might make up for it. maybe.
i suppose a person could choose to register a Scout II as a commercial
vehicle when bringing it into CA, but... if you don't have to, i'd say
don't bother. the extra fees for a truck like that are probably not worth
it. all pickups in CA are supposed to carry commercial tags, but it *is*
possible to register one non-commercial. the restrictions if you do that
are pretty heavy, and the fines for getting caught breaking them even
heavier.
when i registered my B122 after 11 years of non-registration, they hit me
pretty hard. they not only wanted the actual weight, but they tossed in
some fees for the actual payload capacity too (something they did NOT do
with the TravelAlls or Scout). total fees above registration costs were
$100, the total came out to something like $165 or so the first go 'round.
whatever your weight is at the time of initial registration, you will pay
that weight fee (and all additional fees) for the duration of your continued
registration, and that one fee will neither increase nor decrease. for me
it was kind of amusing, really. kinda. each year the "road use tax" went
up a couple bucks, and the actual registration fees went down, so i still
paid less each year than the year before, in spite of no change in the
weight fee. i don't know what it would cost me to re-register the thing
today. i'm hesitant to ask them. it's heavier now than it was, with an
appropriate increase in cargo capacity. (and a good 345 ready to drop in
where once originally sat a BD220).
