RE: Alignment question
Dave,
The way this adjustment works on the Scout II is really easy. You just
loosen the clamp nuts on each end of the tie rod itself. Then just grab the
tie rod in the middle. Turn it one way and you increase toe out, turn it
the other way and you increase toe in. Note that the tie rod ends are
threaded with a different pitch. So the amount of toe change per rev is
actually the difference between the pitches of the two ends.
Of course you may spend the extra hours on the obligatory rust freezing the
threads on the tie rod ends.

Yes, Ryan it is a Scout II. And everyone else (Ryan,Steve, Mac, etc.)
thanks
for the replies. I did well in abstract algebra, number theory, and that
stuff
back in college, but Scout maintainence is something new to me.
As I understand this setup, you can roughly adjust each side independently.
By
removing the cotter pin, disconnecting the tie rod end from the knuckle,
adjusting the end 1 full turn (either in or out) and reconnecting the whole
setup. A pain in the butt? Absolutely, which is why I didn't insist on it.
(I doubt if it makes a difference, but I do have a 2WD so my steering setup
might be slightly different from the 4WD most of you guys seem to have.)
As for the steering wheel not being centered, yes it is annoying. But I'm
getting used to it already. In a few days I should know instinctively where
center is.
Thanks again, all.
Dave
