Hauler Purchases Questions
I have stumbled across two possible grerat deals on old trucks to use
to retrieve other old junker purchases I may make. One is a '72 IH 1510
with a flatbed on the back. It is not a very long flatbed (maybe 12' or
14'), but it is pretty big and heavy duty. It is listed as having a GVW
rating of 14000 lbs. The other is a ramp back style '82 GMC 3500. It is
the type that holds the vehicle on its bed, which is slanted so that you
pull out ramps and drive up on it, or it has a ramsey winch that will
pull a non-runner up on it. It also is not terribly long, and I can't
imagine getting anything longer a Scout II on it, and maybe not even
that. It is rated at 10,000 lbs GVW, and has a 454 and I believe a turbo
400 tranny. I can't get a vehicle on the back of the flatbed, but could
use it to tow with. I also can't get many IH purchases on the back of
the car hauler, but could tow with it as well. The IH is a manual
tranny, but I don't know which-likely a 4-speed, and it has a V8, though
which is unknown. So-which makes more sense? The GMC is a little more,
but is also a crewcab and is MUCH better shape, but is going for $1100,
while the IH is fairly ratty, and only $800. The worst thing I could
find on the IH was that the wooden runners between the metal flatbed and
the frame-rails is a little rotten up at the very front-only about two
feet are bad, but I think everything else, though ugly, is very
workable/usable. Just soliciting any advice! Thanks!
