Backfiring & dieseling
Backfiring is almost always ignition. Most likely, your points have just
slipped.
Dieseling: My '70 TE used to diesel badly on regular intervals. Made no
sense... new rebuild, no smog, tuned right. It turned out that the throttle
cable would sometimes hang hang up at the firewall. So I guess the moral of
this is that you need to make sure that the throttle plate closes to the
point it is supposed to.. this means tuning it up and setting the idle to
the correct low point.
If you do have one of those solenoids make sure that somebody didn't use it
to set the idle!
