Just an observation, actually a question. Regardless of what U-Haul
says, I have 4 or 5 buddies who haul outfits in the neighborhood of 8
or 9K lbs. with their 250's. Is the limitation the drive-train on your
250, the tow setup on your 250, or could it be the limitation that
U-Haul puts on their car trailer?

John,
I think the limitation is the ultra-conservative weight ratios that UHaul has
decided to use. This probably gives them a large safety margin as well as
limiting their liability.
I've towed a 5000 lb travel trailer loaded with gear and hardly knew it was
back there (except for the frequent stops for gas!).
I was told by the UHaul counter person that to determine the amount of weight
UHaul will allow you to pull on one of their trailers, subtract 800 from your
tow vehicle's weight. In my case, F250 =4450 lb. (according to their tables
which may also be on the low side). That means I can trailer a vehicle that
weighs no more than 3650 lbs on one of their trailers. If I can prove that
the Scout 80 weighs this amount or less, I'm home free.
Maybe I'll just drive the Scout to Utah.
