The reason for the electric drive system in a locomotive, or mine truck,
is the ability to start a dead load. They need to apply 100% power to a
non-moving load. This lasts a long time. All kinds of other
transmissions were tried, they all died an ugly death because of the
startup problem. Gears would be better for flying at crusie speed. But
the clutch can't start the train. Same with hydraulic transmissions.
