I have used a product called Engine Wash off the shelf of Pep Boys. It
is essentially home heating oil, diesel, which you add to your engine
-before-changing the oil. You warm up the engine, add this stuff and run
for 10 minutes or more, then drain and replace with fresh oil and
filter.
