carb choices
Hi-
I'll thow out more carb questions, which will no doubt stir up the pot
some. I've got a 350 in my 800, which currently has a Holley 4175
mounted on a GM Al intake. This particular 4175 is in pretty sad shape,
and also the choke arrangement isn't compatible w/ my intake. Given
that I can't afford an EFI setup, I'm looking for another carb option.
Idealy, I'd like a spreadbore carb, because then I wouldn't have to
replace the intake manifold that I have (saves me $100 or so). I know
you can get spreadbore/squarebore adapters, but I don't think that will
work for me because 1) I'd have to get a shorter air cleaner and 2) the
intake has 4 holes in it, which I would think would obstruct the airflow
coming out of a squarebore carb.
Now I don't have any barnd loyalty to anyone, so I don't really care
what brand I get. Mostly I want something that I can get an electric
choke for, and aside from that, the best off-road performance is what
I'm looking for. I've heard that some people swear by the edelbrock
performer carbs for offroad because they have smaller float bowls or on
the side or something. They also have the off road kit. For the
holleys I've head that the center hung floats will be better for off
camber stuff, and the side hung floats are better for hill
clibs/decent. With the 4150/4160 carbs I think you can pick your bowls
for either way, but there and with the edelbrock as well, I'd need a new
squarebore manifold.
What I was thinking is the Holley 4011 carb, which is a spreadbore, but
doesn't use the modular bowls like other holleys. It looks like holley
might be stopping making these, but summit is offering them for $218 or
so on what they have left. Any thoughts on these? The main complaint
I've hear about holleys is that they leak fuel, but the 4010 and 4011
don't have the problem because they just have one gasket. With these
its harder to find the fuel slosh prevention kits, which I assume are a
good idea for off-road.
How about quadrajets? Can't find much information on these. Predators
and Webers are probably out of my price range, so no need to consider
those. Anything else I should look into? Thanks for the info.
On a side note, I just got the scout back on the road after putting in
the D-44 truetrack front. I'll have to test it out in our local quarry
tommorow night. Gotta be careful not to break anything tho, cuz I'm
heading out west the following week.
