Eric,
You should try and keep the spacer under the carb. It will help the
carb stay cool, allow the fuel/air mix to 'mix' better before being
ingested, and raise the air intake up away from some of the engine heat.
If you can't keep it because of hood room, or bolt issues, than go
ahead and get rid of it, but; you should keep it if possible.
