Hey, all you guys.  While we're on this 2WD/4WD Scout subject, one of the
questions I asked that I am not sure ever made it to the digest had to do
with my '71 SCout 800.  It seems "flimsily" constructed for an IH.  The
channel of metal that holds the cross-memeber in place is only a small piece
of cornered-metal that has holes drilled down its length.  I was wondering
if anyone knew if this could be a conversion from 2WD to 4WD that the
converter made the parts for instead of getting the original IH parts for.
This would help explain the possible leaping into 4WD at high speed that I
experienced-if things were not completely stable.
I also know that this vehicle was at one point in a junkyard, so maybe the
guys there made it into a 4WD so that they could sell it easier.  Anyway,
here is an illustration of what I am saying:

this brace, from the top, looks like this:

with the bottom half of this bent upwards at ninety degrees to run along
side and be welded to the frame.

And the side view is something like this:

with the bottom rails curving up to meet the ends.
The cross-member has two holes that line up with two of the holes in this
brace that is welded to the frame, and two bolts hold it in place.
Also, I swapped the old wheels off of my '68 T'all (4X4) 1100 onto this
Scout and they fit.  This should give some indication of what axles are
under there, and thus if any alterations have been made?
Scout VIN as it shows up on papers (and inside the door) is:  882827G427157
So, anyone know if this was originally a 4WD?  Originally came with a 304,
4-Speed?
