Mike,

I had the dist bearings go bad in a car once.  Drove me bananas for
months. 

I couldn't find it for anything.  One day while I had a timing light on
it, I had just bought the light and was just playing, I noticed the timing
jumping around.  Then it didn't take too long to figure it out.  BTW the
simptoms would be the same with points or electronic dist.
