196 Engine
Hi All,
Are the 196 engines the same throughout the 80 through 800B series?
Would the engine mounts be the same throughout? Aside from looking at
the upper dipstick mounting holes, how can you identify a 196? Are the
lower block components shared with the 152?
Reason for asking - I've located a non-running 196 (I believe) on a
bodyless frame with a three speed/twin stick transfer case, no rear
axle. The engine appears complete except for a missing distributor
assembly and air cleaner.
I've got an extra (disassembled) 152, and would eventually like to
switch out my runing 152 for a 196. If the lower parts are common, this
196 might be worth getting. The guy selling it is trying to get rid of
some misc 800 parts which include a hood, and a travel top which has
been cut in half. He's asking three hundred for the whole mess. I
haven't yet seen the hood or liftgate on the top, but if they're in good
shape I could stand to replace the ones I currently have. I'd also
wouldn't mind trying to duplicate the modified travel top Sarah had on
her pink Scout in Charlotte. I figured if I could get the parts for
less, it might be a good deal.
OTH, I know of at least one running 196 (reportedly) that I can get for
no more than $200.
What do you guys think?, are the 196s all the same?
TIA,
Chad Sibert
