Scout II Spare Tire Mounting

Reapers,

Can anyone tell me how the spare tire carrier is fastened to the bed of the
Scout II? I mean it's obvious there are four large machine screws (with
external tooth lock washers under the heads) holding the plate to the side
of the bed, but are these simply sheet metal screws, or are there some sort
of backing nuts hidden inside the fender.

I just bought a full sized spare (10.5x31-R15LT) and rim and will need to
relocate the mount in order to fasten it into the back of my Traveler. I
assume there are backing nuts behind the bed wall from the factory, and I
doubt large plain sheet metal screws will hold the mount in place one the
tire is attached. Trying to reach the backing nuts without removing the
quarter panel would be a feat for an alien with 48" long arms, so I'd
rather not go there. I guess I could wait to relocate the mount until I
finally get around to replacing my rusty steel quarter panels with
fiberglass ones. Until then the spare can just lay in the back... although
I don't like that huge waste of space.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

John L.
