D:
"Spring over" means leaf springs mounted on top of the axle housings
(differential). "Spring under" means leaves mounted under the axle housings
(Stock Scout).
A "coil" suspension uses coil type springs mounted between the body and
axle housing as in many large GM cars of yore and certain, high end SUVs of
today. In a coil setup, there are usually two or four "locater rods" that
connect the axle housing to the frame so that it can only move up and down
against the springs and not move forward, back, left or right. The new era
Jeeps are set up this way.
