Ken, This sounds exactly like my experience with a sticking shift cable
about 4 years ago. The shifter became progressively more difficult to move.
I removed the cable which appeared undamaged externally and pulled back the
rubber boots on the ends and put penetrating oil in both ends and worked the
cable back and forth although it never got any better. I tried to remove
the inner cable from the outer sleeve but wasn't able to do so. I put the
old cable back in and continued to oil it hoping it would get better but it
didn't. I ended up replacing the cable with one from Super Scout
Specialists [I think]. With the new cable, the shifter moves easier than
ever - at least since I've owned the truck.

I was able to remove everything from in the cab to determine that it was the
cable that was causing the problem.

Enjoy the weekend,

J. Michael
