There's a writeup in... FourWheel & OR? this month.. about Warn's new
super-duty front axle shaft kits (NO MORE OBLONGED STUB SHAFTS!!) and
all about what pieces will take what amount of torque.. in the stock
setup, the U-joints actually take more abuse than the stub shafts, which
is why they oblong.. but at greater angles, the U-joints also exert more
force on the stubs.
How many broken axle shafts/U-joints have you seen when going *straight
ahead*? Now, how many break when you turn the wheel to the lock and
then get on the throttle?
