You need to buy a mechanical drive tach that runs off the engine. Or, there
are electrical tachs for diesels that work off a small magnet you attach to
the fan on the alternator. 

By the tach that has the lowest "top RPM". Your diesel is a relatively slow
reving motor and you obtain more accuracy by the very fact of having a
lower RPM range across the scale than say, a high performance 10,000 RPM
max tach will provide.
