The heat riser thingy works like this. There is a passage for exhaust
through the heads and the intake manifold. It is to heat the intake
manifold. normally no exhaust gasses flow through this passage. When the
engine is cold the heat riser (which is a butterfly valve to shut off the
exhaust flow in the starboard pipe) closes and the gasses flow through the
head and the manifold.
