Eric and others,
My '72 T'all has dual tanks.  One is accessed via the gas cap on right fornt fender, and the rear tank is accessed via the gas cap on the left rear quarter (outside).  Perhaps the one you saw/have is an aftermarket setup.  Its easier to cut a 4" hole in the inner fender (or tranny tunnel, Dan) than to section in a gas cap/filler neck into the rear quarter.
