Re: Clutch PP

Chad,

I just replaced a closed face type clutch in my '65 Model 80. My new closed
face pressure plate had some fiber-board type spacers between the clutch
fingers and the housing when I got it from NAPA. They were held tightly in
place by the finger springs and when I bolted the PP to the flywheel, I was
able to remove them. Only problem is that now the clutch fingers seem to be
too far forward (toward the flywheel). The throw-out bearing just bearly
touches them when you engage the clutch and consequently the clutch can't be
disengaged.
I'm sure these spacers were there just for shipping and I'm thinking the same
for your H-shaped pieces. As to why my clutch won't disengage... that's still
a mystery.

I didn't know you could interchange a closed and open face pressure plate.
Mine was an exact match and it still doesn't work!

Roy,

I had the same problem when I relaced the pressure plate on my 65 Model 80.
What I did to solve the problem was to order a longer pin for the slave
cylinder. It's the pin that comes out of the slave cylinder and has an eye on
the end which then connects up to the clutch fork. I ordered one about twice
as long as the one I had and then used my 4 inch grinder to modify it to the
correct length. Works like a charm now. I forgot where I got it from, but it
was ONE of the scout vendors (GUS, SSS, etc).

Hope that helps...

Oh yeah, and BTW, the little spacers that Chad is speaking of are just that,
spacers. Their purpose is so that the pressure plate will be preloaded before
you mount it on the flywheel. That way the mounting tabs of the PP will sit
almost flush on the flywheel for mounting. As you torque down the bolts to
hold the PP on the flywheel, the spacers are released and are to be removed.
If you ever remove your PP again, you should use these spacers before completely
removing from the flywheel. I saved mine *somewhere*....
