Ah Ha!

My vote is that you have a loose / corroded connection in one of the
alternator wire connected to the wiring harness (one of the small wires).
This means higher resistance and would cause lower than normal voltage to
be delivered to the internal voltage regulator.  This means the "cut in
speed" is increased as it takes more voltage to excite the regulator.

Check that out first before you spend money.  Trace the wires connected to
the alternator and carefully check all insulation and connections.
