Michael's solenoid

Michael,
It's going to be very awkward to change the solenoid without removing the
starter. The hardest part of removing the starter is taking all the wires
loose, and you're going to have to da that anyway, so go ahead and take the
starter out.

By the way, if it were me, I'd replace them both as a rebuilt unit as the
combination shouldn't cost you much more than the solenoid did. Get a
lifetime warranty one, and expect to replace it every couple of years if not
oftener. It won't help the starter part in regard to wear, but the Ford
solenoid conversion with the Ford just acting as a relay to the Delco will
probably get you satisfactory Delco performance for as long as the vehicle
lasts. Not as good, perhaps, as wiring the Ford into the main cable to the
Delco, but a lot easier and usually does the same job and lasts as long.
