Occasionally, either on a new acquisition or through my own carelessness, I
would let rivets score deeply into my brake drums. I always figured that as
soon as the new shoes seated, that this gave me additional surface area and
improved braking. Maybe just because of my expectations, the brakes always
did seem better than new. The use of bonded shoes eliminated the two neat
grooves and would, instead just give me a really ugly drum when the shoes
wore through. In my own behalf, I never personally let bonded shoes wear
completely out, as the lack of rivets gave me a lot more time to do
necessary maintenance.

I don't tell any of this in anything but an embarrassed confession, but it
kind of reinforces Tom H.'s post. I'm now such a fuddy-duddy that my brakes
get over checked, but of course, with disk brakes that checking is a lot
easier and more convenient.
