Yes they are water cooled.  An old engineering "rule of thumb" for 
sizing engine accessories is that of the energy released during 
combustion 1/3 goes out the crank shaft, 1/3 goes out the exhaust pipe, 
and 1/3 goes out the radiator.  The oil really doesn't carry off too 
much heat.  It does carry some but nothing like the water.  This is why 
big engines need big radiators.

Even with this inefficiency my old IH is as efficient as any battery 
powered car.  Remember that in an electric power plant approximately 2/3 
of the energy released during coal burning, (or from a nuc) winds up out 
the condenser.  Actually less than 1/3 winds up as electricity.  Battery 
powered cars are more correctly called "Remote Pollution Vehicles"  

Most of the "greenies" don't want to look at that.
