When I replaced the O-rings on my water pipes last fall, here's what I did
and I have leaked not a drop.  

1 I sandblasted the pipes inside and out

2 I painted the outside with red paint from True-Value Hdw.  I left the
inside unpainted on the supposition that the antifreeze would protect it
and I didn't want paint flakes circulating in the cooling system.

3 In installed O-rings from True Value Hdw

4 I lubed the O-rings with straight anti freeze 

5 I stuck 'em in & bolted down the clamps.

Done!
