Re[2]: Tranny cable.
John L,
The tranny is the one I took out to have rebuilt after I broke the
reverse band. It IS the original tranny as evidenced by the condition
of the internals, and the covers etc, and the bolts with paint on them
etc, etc. I marked the tranny (I always mark my parts when I send
them out to make sure I get the same ones back) so I know it's mine.
The problem here appears to be that there exists a sort of
hysteresis (does everyone know what that is?) in the cable. The old
one would retain it's position somewhat because it was somewhat bound
internally all the time. The new one is smooth as glass. When I sent
the tranny out, I kept all the levers, clips, rings, washers, shims
and nuts and bolts, that went on the outside of the case. This place
does trannies all day long for the shops around Tucson. When you take
your car to billybobs autohaus, they don't build the tranny! They
send it to banks, otherwise they can't make money.
Anyways, they built the tranny, and it's good, except that the
internal linkage is maybe shorter?
I am planning to add about 1/4" to 3/8" of radius from the shifter
pivot to effectively "pull or push MORE cable". Thus eliminating my
problem. I would need to shorten the length of the lever on the
tranny to perform the remedy on the bottom end of the cable. Too much
hassle. Basically if I add the radius length to the shifter control I
can retain the factory characteristics of every other part, and even
go back tot he original adjuster position if I solve this problem some
other way in the future.
Dunno why but...
The new cable is the problem! With the old cable it worked
perrrrfect! ...for about 15 minutes until the cable broke! So I know
the tranny internals are fine.
hysteresis .... hysteria.... hmmmmm.
coincidence? Supernatural? Perhaps...
Thanks everyone for the continuing support in my madness!
