Thanks for the open/closed knuckle info.  Land Rover Series owners 
talk a lot about swivel ball leakage/gaskets/pits.  Their balls cost 
a lot (about $175/side), so keeping them polished to reduce pitting 
and enhance sealing is paramount.  Intuitively, it seems the swivel 
ball can rotate only so far before interfering with the rotating UJ 
innards ...where the open knuckle (as on my Scout2 Dana 44 axle) 
does not suffer the same interference.
