Locking Hubs

Hey Digesters

I have a question, i have a 77 SSII 345 Auto, my question is when i 
bought it i was told i didnt have to lock the hubs to put it in 4wd.  If 
this is the case, why is there locking hubs on it, the driver side will 
lock in but the passenger sside will turn and gets tight and stops about 
an inch before it says lock.  If i dont have to lock the hubs to put it 
in 4wd, does locking the hubs give it something extra?  This is my first 
4wd so im kinda dumb on things.  I tried putting it in 4wd without 
locking the hubs, and it worked.  im totally confused about this, i hope 
someone out there has some answers for me, thanx again
