Re: 4x4 Illiterate
The rag joint is a "less expensive" form of U-joint in the steering
column next to the steering gear that allows for some movement of the
body and steering column relative to the steering gear and the frame to
which it is attached. Earlier Scouts had an actual U-joint here. It's a
piece of fiber/rubber material (from which the name "rag" comes) like a
piece of tire sidewall bolted between two metal plates so that the rubber
can flex as the steering shaft is turned if the two sides are not exactly
aligned.
