Alternator weirdness

Ok  all you electrical pros out there please help.  I have a 72 Scout with a 345 which ran real well until just recently, here's what happened.  I noticed that the alternator guage was leaning a hair toward dsicharge, so to check and see what was going on I started the Scout and disconnected the positive battery cable and it died so I took it to work and they replaced it ( I work in an auto parts store-thank god) I took the new alternator(actually rebuilt) and installed it and did the same thing it stopped running as soon as I disconnected the positive battery cable so again I took it back and I got another alternator and we tested this one before I took it home and it tested as being good.  I install it and do the same test and lo and behold the engine is running when I take the battery cable off and I figure I am out of the woods.  Also I noticed that when I started the put the cable back on the alternator guage went shooting up to charge and then almost as quickly  went back to being just a hair towards leaning to discharge again.  So including the original alternator I brought in I am on my third alternator and the case with all of them is that the diodes are fried.  Anyone have any idea what is causing this?  All assistance greatly appreciated
