Jim:
If the star wheel just won't back the shoes off, and no amount
of prying will get the drum to slip off, you can try this:
Drill out the center head of the two pins that hold the shoes
to the backing plate. Then, you might be able to pull the
drum (and the shoes) off, they will kind of pivot, as they will
still have the pushrods going to the wheel cylinder. If that won't
do it. remove the brake line from the wheel cylinder and the
bolts holding the wheel cylinder on. You still have the
e-brake cable to deal with, but it will usually come apart.
