Ken,
On my Travelall that had a 345 and a 5 speed OD tranny, when I was towing
and on a grade, it always seemed to me that I reached sort of a torque
plateau at 16 to 1800 rpm. The engine would go slower and slower up to
that point and then sort of take a deep breath and really go to work.
Having grown up with Ford flathead V8's this used to bother me at first,
because it seemed like a funny place to reach maximum torque.
I'm still dumbfounded that my Travelall that held luggage, three kids,
two dogs, three adults, and had room for the kids to sleep was only an
inch or two longer in wheelbase than my Terra which is hardly long enough
to do anything but have fun in and then in the back country is too damn
long.
