This is exactly what I intend to do, after I get a Traveler top for my
Terra and look things over real well to make sure it'll work.  Let me
know how it works.  I really want to keep the regular tailgate

If there's not enough room for a center T-handle & associated latch
hardware between the window & bottom edge, you could always go with two
separate T-handles in the corners, like some pickup canopies have.  I
once built a canopy which had 2 T-handles attached to the canopy instead
of the liftgate -- just the way it worked out best with the particular
design; worked great.
