I'm a week behind again.  This time my excuse is "I was out of town for 4 
days".

Your description sounds exactly like what my Scout used to do.  I finally 
got a timing light on it when it did it's little act and guess what ... 
No spark.

My solution was kind of drastic.  I replaced everything in the ignition 
except the drive gear on the distributor.  Mallory dist, MSD ignition, 
coil and wires.  You would not believe the difference!

It wasn't cheap but I highly recommend it.  Even passed the smog test for 
1998 year vehicles withOUT catalysts or an air pump.
