Dan,
The compressors require lubrication. The all have oil in the crankcase
just like an engine or regular air compressor. Some of the oil travels
around the system with the freon. Not required just happens and doesn't
hurt anything.
The new and old refrigerants (R12 and R134a) have incompatible oils. But
the oil travels with the freon on either system.
